You might be interacting with the movers just for a few hours or a day, but it is advisable to know who you are dealing with to avoid conflict. Additionally, a removals company must be hired only if you can afford it and are short on time or resources to do it yourself.

A quick checklist when you shop for the right mover:

- Quote unquote
Shop for the right mover – get quotations, compare costs, ask for references. If looking online, scan through comments and feedback on the removal company's website or in public chat rooms.

- Clearly speaking
Do you speak the same language as your movers? If not arrange for someone to translate. Also, check about the tools and methods of packing that would be employed, especially to protect breakables.

- The catch
Certain removal companies have attractive reasons to choose them – off peak rates during weekends, seasonal discounts and such. Some offer to clean prior to packing and moving, too, while others do it all, including unpacking.

- Insurance
Hire a licenced removals company who offer an insurance coverage – avoid being held liable for any damage to property or life. Dubai-based Allied Pickfords offers door to door protection for your consignment, details of which are available on their website alliedpickfords.com
