Abu Dhabi: A three-dimensional model that will map all areas of Abu Dhabi to aid urban planning and infrastructure development is being developed by Abu Dhabi Municipality, officials said yesterday.

The 3D model will cover more than 5,866 square kilometres in the emirate, and include the area of the capital city, the Western Region and Al Ain.

It will be carried out by the Geographic Information System section at the municipality's spatial data division.

According to the statement, the two-year 3D modelling project will be the first of its kind in terms of size, technological setup and applied solutions.

An official from the municipality told Gulf News that he could not reveal the cost of the project.

"It is a massive project, so work on implementing it is already under way. When finished, it will be useful to a range of government planning departments," he said.

The 3D model is expected to enhance planning, designing and development processes being undertaken as part of the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, the municipality statement said.

Yousuf Abdul Rahman Al Marzouqi, director of spatial data at the municipality, said the project would be carried out in four stages.

The plans will be exhibited at international exhibitions.
