Abu Dhabi: The UAE will emphasise in the forthcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly, the need for concerted and unified world efforts to face the challenges of a global drinking water shortage, climate change, falling economic growth and its effects on education and health.

In its submissions in the assembly, the UAE will also highlight the issue of the Iranian occupation of the three UAE islands, namely Abu Mousa and Greater and Lesser Tunbs.

A delegation from the Federal National Council (FNC) is gearing up to take part in the 118th assembly of the IPU scheduled to be held from April 13 to April 18 in Cape Town. A few days ago the delegation held a meeting to discuss the assembly's agenda and to streamline the FNC's participation in it. The delegation will be headed by First Deputy Speaker of the FNC Ahmad Shabib Al Dhahiri and will comprise Second Deputy Speaker Ali Jasem Ahmad, FNC members Dr Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Sultan Saqar Al Suwaidi, Yousuf Ali Bin Fadhel, Khalid Hamad Bushihab, Rashid Mohammad Al Shariqi and a number of FNC officials.

Al Dhahiri said the 118th IPU assembly derives greater importance from the spectrum of global political, economic and humanitarian issues it will discuss.

The items on the assembly's agenda includes a debate on the world's political, economic and social situation and the role of parliaments in striking a balance between national security and individual freedom.
