Dubai: Environmentalists and organisations who made big contributions in protecting environment were rewarded last night.
Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, on behalf of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, honoured the winners of the Zayed International Prize for the Environment last night at Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
The award was founded in 1999 by Shaikh Mohammad to recognise and encourage environmental achievements supporting and promoting the implementation of Agenda 21, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation for Sustainable Development, in line with the vision and philosophy of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
In total $1 million (Dh3.67 million) was divided among three individuals or groups that have made considerable achievements for environmental research or protection.
Three categories
The Zayed International Prize for the Environment, open to both individuals and organisations, is presented every two years in three categories.
The $500,000 prize for global leadership was awarded to Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland from Norway who works as special envoy in climate change for the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The prize for scientific or technological achievements worth $300,000 is shared between Jane Lubchenco, a world leader in environmental sciences and V. Ramanathan, a distinguished climatologist.
The third prize for environment action leading to positive change in society of $200,000 has been given to Environment Development Action in the Third World (ENDA) which works with the poor and developed a range of projects and activities to combat desertification and sustainable energy.
This prize is also shared with Tierrmerica, a specialised information service on environment.
