Technology safeguards UAE marine ecosystem
The world's largest upcoming single-site aluminium production facility in Abu Dhabi has embarked on the use of technology that will only emit waste water back into the ocean that is within a 1C temperature difference.

Dubai: The world's largest upcoming single-site aluminium production facility in Abu Dhabi has embarked on the use of technology that will only emit waste water back into the ocean that is within a 1C temperature difference.
The Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) six kilometre-squared production facility in Taweelah is being built in two phases and is set to become the world's fifth largest aluminium producer.
The power plant will use cooling tower technology to reduce the temperature of the water used during the energy production process and ensure that water is returned to the sea within a 1C temperature range.
According to Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency guidelines, a 5C increase in temperature is permitted.

Once Phase One is completed by 2010, it will have a production output of approximately 700,000 tonnes. At full capacity, it will boast an output of 1.4 million tonnes of primary aluminium.
EMAL has awarded a Dh36m contract to Italian manufacturer, Società per Impianti Generali (SPIG) for the supply of its cooling towers.
"EMAL is committed to using the most environmentally-sound technology available and the SPIG cooling tower technology helps safeguard the delicate marine ecosystem of Al Taweelah," said Duncan Hedditch, EMAL, CEO.
