Residents told to be cautious

The UAE Meteorological Department yesterday warned residents to stay away from the wadis during the weekends because of the strong surface winds and thunderstorms.

The UAE Meteorological Department yesterday warned residents to stay away from the wadis during the weekends because of the strong surface winds and thunderstorms.

"We expect flash floods, particularly in Fujairah and parts of the northern emirates, due to the heavy rain on the mountains in Oman and the UAE," said a senior meteorologist.

He said flash water can come into Wadis from the mountains located in Oman.

The Met office said winds that be as high as 75kmph could hit parts of the emirates. These winds have been generating high waves in the sea, making it a dangerous for most vessels.

Meanwhile, in Ras Al Khaimah, the committee set up to face Gonu called on the public to avoid mountainous areas and not to visit wadis and water falls if it rains.

The committee warned it will be extremely difficult to resuce people stranded in mountainous areas.

Avoid sea

Dubai Police have advised residents to be cautious and not to go to sea. They must not drive in areas prone to strong winds.

Police asked residents to report incidents relating to the cyclone to Dubai Police on 999 or 609 5555 or 269 4848 or toll free on 800 8888.

Residents in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah can call on 999.

Jamal Al Merri, Dubai Police's Deputy Commandant General and Deputy Director of the Crisis and Disaster Management Team, said Hatta Clinic has been designated as a centre to receive emergency cases from areas near the Omani border.
