Abu Dhabi: The UAE economy is losing Dh1.5 billion every year due to inadequate recycling of waste, according to the Centre of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi has launched a waste management initiative to rein in the massive loss of revenue and to curb the contamination of soil and groundwater sources, officials told a press conference yesterday.

It aims to reduce waste generation by 80 per cent in the next eight years, beginning with a 45 per cent reduction by next year and 70 per cent in the next 5 years.

A tariff regime for waste-producing commercial establishments in Abu Dhabi will be introduced from March 16 to help achieve the target.

The initiative will encourage businesses, which generate 80 per cent of the waste in the emirate, to reuse and recycle waste to reduce financial loss and environmental pollution, Hamad Al Ameri, General Manager of the Centre of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi, said.

Detailing the potential for recycling in the emirate, he said it is possible to produce sheets of glass, wood, cardboard and fibre using waste as well as raw materials for producing cement and some minerals. Al Ameri said construction wastes are widely converted into raw materials for building roads and other infrastructure.
