Dubai: A thick layer of fog blanketed Dubai on Saturday, reducing visibility to less than 50 metres in some areas, motorists said.
Fog was also reported in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and is expected to cover other parts of the country, including Al Ain.
At the Dubai Airport, some flights were cancelled, including flights to India and Egypt. Other passengers told Gulf News their flights to Dubai were diverted to other airports.
On Friday, heavy fog blanketed Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, where temperatures dropped to at least 18C. Visibility was reduced to less than 50 metres in some areas, the weather bureau said.
Fog occurs because the warm, moist winds from the Gulf come inland and remain there because there is no dry breeze from the mountains to push it back out to sea.
The moisture sits there in the atmosphere and is turned to fog because of colder temperatures in the night. With inputs from Mahmood Saberi, Staff Reporter

I flew from London and my flight was diverted to Muscat. I think I have been waiting at the Muscat airport since 4am. There is no information at all about when we can leave.

My flight with Emirates from Lahore to Dubai was diverted to Muscat, along with six other Emirates Airlines flights.
We've been stuck in Muscat airport since 4am. No one has any clue what is going on.

I would like to request motorists to keep a safe distance when driving. The fog has become increasingly heavy for the past two days. Heavy truck drivers must use indicators.

I was driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi at around 1am today when I noticed the heavy fog on the road. It took me too much time to reach Musaffah because I was driving very careful. Thank God, the sign boards were visible. I could barely see the building where I work from a few metres away. My son said it looked like we were travelling in Zombie Land.
