Dubai: The emirate is expected to have a new zoo soon. The Dubai Municipality has started a study on the new zoo project to be built in the emirate and aims to shift the animals in the existing zoo.

The location and area will be selected after the details are studied.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said a consultant and an action team will come up with the final concept of the project, including the selection of a suitable site, required area and distribution of animals in line with international standards.

Cage system

The study is expected to be completed in two months.

The civic body was presented with the concepts of ‘Safari', as adopted in countries like Singapore and Thailand, and ‘Cages' by the consultant.

Lootah said that considering the area constraints, the municipality plans to adopt the cage system.

"The cages will be arranged and distributed in accordance with each category and type of animals, birds and other species in a comfortable way and adequate space without affecting the neighbourhood."

He said that a team of specialists, veterinarians, animal curators and entire qualified cadres for animal welfare will be available at the site.

Oldest in the Gulf

"Actually, the current zoo should be improved, as it is very old and small after the huge development around it and increasing number of animals and visitors. It was established by Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1967," he said.

Dubai Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Gulf and its management was taken over by the Dubai Municipality in the 1970s.

It houses more than 200 animal species, including some of the rarest ones.

Home to more than 1,000 animals, the government-owned facility in Jumeirah attracts thousands of visitors every year. In 2008, it is estimated to have attracted close to 340,000 visitors.

However, along with appreciation, it has drawn criticism for the conditions in which animals are forced to stay due to scarcity of space.

There have been announcements regarding building of a new zoo for more than eight years now. According to previously announced plans, the new zoo was to be located at Al Mushrif or Dubailand. However, the projects were put on hold.

At a glance
  • 1967: The Dubai Zoo is set up in Jumeirah, and becomes a landmark, indicated as the "town's end". In 1971, Dubai Municipality takes over the management of the zoo.
  • 2007: The municipality announces plans for a new zoo on 500 acres of land in Dubailand, which will include a safari. The construction of the new facility is later postponed.
  • 2003: Dubai Municipality announces in January it will build a new Dh610 million zoo on 560 hectares of land behind Al Mushrif Park. The plan is put on hold in 2004.
  • 2011: The municipality says it has long-term plans to relocate the zoo in an area between Al Khail Road and Al Ain Road, since it is possible to get a bigger space there.

Finally, a question that i've always been asking is answered. But as one of the readers posted above, I will not believe it until it is a reality. It was very disheartening to see the animals living in cramped cages. I would say that this decision came in very late. Anyways, lets hope for the best.

I would like to suggest Jabel Ali area around Discovery Gardens. Though it belongs to Dewa, the advanced technology would enable it to be possible to create an area for animal park. Close to the road would be convenient because it would be a good view from these residential areas and an elevated walking or cycling track around the park for clearer view would be sugessted. Animals like rabbits peacock, ducks, swans, giraffe and deers should be left together with open top and one mesh fence all around along with a pond. Moreover, the vacant Villa area would also be flourished and owners at loss would be profited.

It would be better near Ras al Khor wildlife sanctuary. This will be a good eco system for the animals. Best wishes..........!

Happy to hear the good news. Hope the action plan is carried out soon to shift the animals from cramp surroundings to a spacious new place. Mushrif area would be a good idea since the park is covered with huge trees and gives a forest like look!!
