Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, on Saturday received Hélene Pelosse, director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), at the Al Nakheel Palace and congratulated her on her new posting at the agency which is located in Abu Dhabi.
During the meeting, Shaikh Abdullah wished Pelosse all success in her mission and discussed with her requirements for Irena in the next stage and ways to encourage non-member states to join the agency.
They also reviewed arrangements for hosting the third world renewable energy summit in Abu Dhabi from January 18-21 next year and Irena's third preparatory meeting in the capital from October 12-13, 2009.
On her part, Pelosse said the great assistance and support from the UAE in general and the Masdar initiative in particular in establishing Irena's headquarters in Abu Dhabi, underlines the major role the UAE will play in advancing renewable energy projects in various countries in the region.
She also lauded the efforts spearheaded by Shaikh Abdullah over the recent months that were crowned by the selection of the UAE as the home for Irena.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Saif Al Suwaidi, acting director general of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), affirmed yesterday that the clean and renewable energy sector is one of major areas of interest for the fund as a key generator and provider of energy to the next generations in developing nations.
"Conservation of the environment is one of our key priorities in criteria for funding projects," he said during talks yesterday with Pelosse.
The meeting explored prospects of joint cooperation in renewable energy and relevant development projects in view of Abu Dhabi government's pledge to offer Dh183 million a year in soft loans through the ADFD for renewable energy projects in developing countries.
