Dubai: Twelve winners have been selected by an independent jury of international experts for the seventh cycle of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices (DIABP) to Improve the Living Environment.

The announcement was made on Thursday at the Dubai Municipality - the sponsor of the award - by Hussain Nasser Lootah, chairman of the DIABP Board of Trustees and the acting director general of the municipality. He said winners in the best practices category came from Burundi, Congo, Senegal, South Africa, China, Indonesia, Spain, Columbia, Mexico and The Americas, while two winners from Palestine and Pakistan would feature in the Best Practices Transfers category.

Each winner will be awarded a cash prize of $30,000, a trophy and a commemorative certificate at the ceremony to be held in Dubai early next year. The date for the event is yet to be finalised.

According to Banshree Banerjee, Chair of the International Jury, the selection was made from a list of 48 initiatives that were short-listed out of nearly 436 entries. Those short-listed also included one initiative from the UAE and six from other Arab nations. The winners were all deemed to have made outstanding contributions towards improving the quality of life in cities and communities.

Banerjee said the final selections were based on tangible impact, partnership, sustainability, leadership, community empowerment, gender equality, social inclusion and innovations that were exemplary.
