Dubai: A Memorandum of Understanding between the UAE and Nepal is essential to protecting the rights of Nepalese workers, said the Nepalese Minister of Labour.

Ramesh Lekhak, Minister of Labour and Transport Management, told Gulf News on the inauguration of the First Nepali job fair in the UAE yesterday that some 1.2 million Nepalese are working abroad therefore the government needs to ensure their welfare.

"There are several problems facing our workers both at the country of origin, as well as at the country of destination, therefore an MoU is essential to ensure the welfare of our workers and regulate their recruitment," said Lekhak. "The export of manpower plays an important role in our country's economic growth as it has helped reduce poverty," he added.

The UAE is the fourth largest importing country for Nepalese workers and some 10 per cent of all Nepalese workers abroad are in the UAE, according to Nepalese government statistics. There are some 77,000 Nepalese working in the UAE, according to Ministry of Labour statistics.

Ahmad Kajour, undersecretary for planning at the Ministry of Labour, said the MoU will enable both countries to systemise the labour force flow into the UAE and it will prevent the exploitation of workers.

The final draft of the MoU is being discussed by both countries.
