Dubai: The Indian consulate has set up 11 application collection centres as part of its preparations for the three-month amnesty which was announced by the Cabinet on Saturday.

The centres will go operational from June 11, and the consulate will be the nodal point where the processing of applications will be held.

R.C. Nair, acting consul-general of India, yesterday said that meetings were held with all the Indian associations in Dubai and the Northern Emirates to discuss the plans that have been put in place by the consulate.

He said a centralised control room will be set up at the consulate with a hotline. Volunteers will also be at hand to answer queries in Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.

On whether the consulate will help buy air tickets for those who cannot afford them, Nair said: "The consulate is aware of this. We have alerted the Government of India and if we are sanctioned to purchase air tickets, we will get it done."

Nair, however, was not able to give figures on Indian amnesty seekers. He said that about 14,000 outpasses were issued by the consulate during the amnesty period in 2003.

He said for Emergency Certificates to be issued people should submit a copy of their passport and visa along with the application. Those who do not have a passport copy but have passport particulars may submit passport number, date and place of issue along with the application and copy of the visa.

Nair said those without the copy of passport or passport particulars should furnish one or more of the following documents (in original) in support of his/her identity - Indian driving licence with photograph, Election Commission ID card, ration card with photograph, labour card/work permit/health card with photograph issued by UAE authorities or certificate of identity with photograph issued by Collector/Superintendent of Police of the district from where the applicant hails.
