80 labourers protest wages

80 labourers say wages less than in contract

Last updated:

Dubai: About 80 Chinese workers protested outside the Ministry of Labour in Dubai, claiming that they were duped into working for a company which paid them less than the salary stated in the contract.

"We were shocked to discover that they are paying us less than agreed," said one of the workers.

The labourer also complained about long working hours - 12 hours instead of the standard eight hours.

Nadim Khan, the representative of the company, dismissed the allegations and said the company has paid the salaries as stated in the contract.

Brigadier Mohammad Al Merri, Head of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs in Dubai (PCLAD), said the workers could be victims of recruitment agents back home.

According to Al Merri, the committee convinced the workers to go back to work after they promised to hold a meeting with the representatives of both the recruitment agency and the company and discuss ways to help the workers regain the money due to them if their claims prove true.
