  • Eight crew members were rescued after their vessel collided with a buoy off Umm Al Quwain due to foggy weather.

Umm Al Quwain The crew of a wooden vessel narrowly escaped when their vessel collided with a floating navigational marker in UAE waters due to the foggy weather, while its crew of eight was safely rescued by boats of UAE Coast guards, an official at the coast guard told Gulf News yesterday.

The incident took place at 7.30am on Wednesday, some four nautical miles off the coast of the northern emirate of Umm Al Quwain.

The vessel, which was laden with foodstuffs, was steaming away from the United Arab Emirates at the time of the incident, authorities said.

Low visibility caused by foggy weather was a contributing factor in the collision near Umm Al Quwain.

The collision caused damage to bow of the vessel, making the exterior of the hull vulnerable to sea water.

A slight breach led to sea water penetrating the hull.

The operation room of the UAE Coast Guard received an emergency call reporting that a cargo vessel was struggling in heavy seas on Wednesday morning and that its crew members had sent out a distress call.

Responding to the call, the Coast Guard deployed boats to rescue the all-Asian crew.

Crew members were removed from their ship and transported to Al Nijoom Island, near Al Himrayah Free Zone.

The Coast Guard boats were able to tow the vessel but only minutes before reaching the shore and at a distance of about 100 metres from Al Himrayah Free zone, the vessel partially sank after sea water leaked inside.
