Two earthquakes of 3.8 and 3.1 magnitudes shook the residents of the UAE east coast Sunday night.
The epicentre of the first quake was in the Gulf of Oman off the coast of Khor Fakkan, according to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS). From Fujairah it was 33km away and its depth was just 7.0km. The centre said the tremor jolted them at around 8:13pm.
The second quake of 3.1 magnitude jolted the area at 9:07pm. Its epicentre was some 27km away from Fujairah and it occurred 8.1km below the earth surface. Both the quakes, however, caused no harm to the public life or damage to the property. Some residents of the area also heard weird sounds just before and after the jolts.
The NCMS has been recording seismic activity across the sea in the Iranian areas for the last couple of months. That area is seismically active though nothing insignificant has recently occurred there. Between both the earthquakes, a third one occurred at 8:38pm. This time it was of 4.6 magnitude but far away from Fujairah into the Iranian territory.
Geologists said the quake is not an unusual event in the areas. “This was a normal and minor seismic activity. People should not be worry about it,” said a seismic expert.
Residents report tremor
The mild tremor hit Fujairah and Masafi areas at around 8.15pm. The earthquake, which was felt by some residents in Marbah , Massafi Taiba districts, did not cause any damage, an official at Fujairah police told Gulf News.
Many residents reported the incident to the Fujairah police operations room, the official said.
