Sharjah: Residents of a residential tower in Sharjah’s Al Tawun area were evacuated on Monday afternoon after a fire broke out on the 20th floor of the building.

“Residents of the building were evacuated as a precautionary measure as the firefighters doused the blaze,” said Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence.

The fire started at around 2pm. Police and civil defence are investigating the cause of the fire.

Five people showed symptoms of asphyxiation and four of them were treated at the scene while a woman was taken to Al Kuwaiti Hospital for treatment, Brigadier Al Suwaidi said.

i think the authorities should have strict punishments for those who throw cigarettes off their balconies. everyday i find a burning one on my balcony, just next to my laundry. whats wrong with those people? dont they just stop and think that they might burn down their flat too?!

I live in a 46 storied building in Sharjah. In spite of all these happening I sometimes come across tenants living in upper floors throwing burning cigarette butts out of their flat windows. who can be blamed for any mishap? The uncivilized tenants themselves. Pray Allah gives them wisdom. Ameen.
