Dubai: Watani Programme concluded a series of summer camps after conducting a full range of heritage activities for children throughout July in Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Kalba.

More than 800 children attended these camps and had the chance to develop their skills, get introduced to UAE cultural activities while enhancing the sense of belonging, promoting national identity and acquiring knowledge and creativity.

Ahmad Obaid Al Mansouri, Coordinator General of Watani Programme, said: "Through these summer camps we communicate with the new generation of the UAE and acquaint them with the values of Emirati society. We set a range of activities to introduce children to the tradition of our society and cultural values. Watani Summer Camps was a great opportunity for children to learn new skills and meet new friends, and to work together efficiently as a team."

One of the children attending the camp in Ras Al Khaimah expressed his joy in taking part in the activities where he got introduced to the wide array of UAE greeting and hospitality traditions and became more aware of the rich heritage of the UAE.

Another child said: "I learnt a lot of fishing skills such as the unique way in catching crabs and throwing the nets into the sea and I also found out about a large variety of fish and marine species that exist in my country which I never saw before."

Through these interactive camp activities, the children were introduced to the rich social and cultural customs of the UAE such as respect for the parents and the elderly. Field trips to elderly homes located across the emirates were arranged during which children made strong emotional statements and showed compassion to the elders.

One particularly popular theme throughout the camps was stargazing activity that served to educate the youth about the solar system, the stars and telescopic observation. The marine, environmental, recycling and social programmes also gained a wide popularity among children.

Watani Programme aimed to provide a useful and enjoyable experience for children during their summer breaks where they learnt various skills in the fields of art, cooking, first aid, astronomy, marine, customs and traditions through fun-filled and informative activities.
