University students invited to give back
Youth group, The Republic is reaching out to students to get involved in a community service project to help Dubai's construction workers
University students across Dubai are being invited to get involved in a good cause to help the UAE's construction workers by visiting sites to distribute food and drink.
The initiative called Tawiyah is organised by The Republic (TR), a student group founded in 2010 by three university students with an aim to give to the community.
"Tawiyah is a way for students to directly interact with construction workers and understand their plight, rather than just contributing to an unfamiliar charity," said Shaikh Saleh, Head of TR's community service department.
Through Tawiyah students conduct monthly visits to construction sites across Dubai to distribute simple foodstuffs such as biscuits and juices. The ongoing initiative has to date, reached out to over 800 laborers across the city. The project involves TR volunteers and other students across university networks.
Saleh's aim is to increase the quantity of food distributed bimonthly.
"The point is not to provide luxury to workers but remind them there are people who care, while at the same time involving students and making their contributions worthwhile," said Hassanain Anver, President of TR.
TR's main objective is to spread awareness of social responsibility to involve more young people in the process of giving back to the world.
The initiative also aims to help youth discover their potential through various activities aimed at cultivating a fraternal environment amongst university students in the country.
