Dubai: The Education Ministry plans to reconsider home learners education as the recent Grade 12 results in this sector were very low.
Based on a recent statistical data gathered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) home learners are not taking education seriously as their results compared to pupils in adults education centres and regular schools greatly varies.
In fact the percentages of pupils getting a 60 per cent pass or above in all subjects is only 1.79 per cent in the Science section and 2.95 per cent in the Arts section for home learners while it's only 14.63 per cent in the Science section and 13.03 per cent in the Arts section in the adult learning centres.
Education Minister Dr Hanif Hassan said in a statement that the current system for home learners should be reconsidered as it is not serving that sector.
He said that he is pleased by the recent outcomes of pupils in regular public schools especially in their performance in Arabic saying that the new system of two terms for grade 12 pupils in public school has proven a success.
"More than 25 per cent of our science section students achieved a 90 per cent average while another 39 per cent had a 80-89 per cent average this year, which is remarkable. Meanwhile the percentage of pupils passing the CEPA [English assessment test] has gone up from 69 per cent last year to 74 per cent this year," said Dr Hassan.
However, a number of adults education centres have been hit by the recent system as under the old system, the passing grade was 40 per cent which is now raised to 60 per cent.
"The passing percentage in our centre dropped for this year and nothing has changed. Our students really work hard to meet the passing grade but they should be more recognised," said Asma Al Darai, Principal of Al Deira Adults Educational Centre.
