Students 'core of educational development'

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Education will keep its supervisory authority on local education councils and zones, said the Minister of Education.
Dr Hanif Hassan yesterday introduced the ministry's development strategy and operational programmes before the Abu Dhabi education council leaders, and directors of education zones in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Western Region.
The new strategy, which will be effective next year, aims to upgrade the state's educational system.
Dr Hassan stressed that the strategy is in line with federal governmental strategy that puts the human element at the forefront.
"The student is the cornerstone of the concept of educational development," he said.
He needs to be provided with lifeskills and knowledge, in addition to Arab and Islamic values, he added. Dr Hassan briefed the meeting about the philosophy behind the strategy that focuses on professional training for teachers, school directors and their assistants, especially in the field of technology.
Guiding programmes
"Language programmes will not concentrate on English only; the ministry is supporting initiatives to develop Arabic language programmes as it is the mother language."
"Guiding programmes will be provided for students in all stages to take the right decision in their study, this programme will continue until the higher level so students can decide about their career," he said.
Abdullah Musabih, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry, explained in detail the strategy and its operational programme.
"We are aiming to achieve through this strategy the proper use of both Arabic and English, technology and being prepared for work placements."
Musabih added "study days will be extended to 180 days including exams", the length of the day will depend on the school environment, he said.
Regarding ministry reform he said "the ministry will be putting regulations in place for the education system and give academic approval for staff and schools and provide them with technical support"
"Education zones will provide schools with services, while schools will be applying the reform and will be able to put their own educational programme in the future" he said.

The strategy's aim is to achieve an educational system that is in harmony with the best international educational standards which prepares the student for a beneficial and productive life and develops his ability for continuous learning to be able to contribute to achieving enduring development for the community.
The Ministry is responsible for planning, executing, following and supervising which leads to a successful educational system putting students, schools and parents in a harmonious system that achieves the highest levels in educational performance, to help deepen the spirit of responsibility in all levels and develops people's obligation towards serving their community.
