Sports auction and donation net Dh73m
The Dubai Sports Council on Monday donated more than Dh70 million in one of the most successful days for the Dubai Cares charity campaign.
Dubai: The Dubai Sports Council on Monday donated more than Dh70 million in one of the most successful days for the Dubai Cares charity campaign.
The Dh72.8 million effort with help from renowned sports stars brought the amount raised to Dh1.258 billion. A sports auction hosted by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) and Kraken Opus under the patronage of Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Al Maktoum, raised Dh25.8 million in Dubai on Monday.
Before the auction started, Dr Ahmad Al Sharif, secretary-general of DSC, said that UAE sports clubs had donated a total of Dh47 million on the day.
Shaikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi of Ajman also donated Dh1 million.
The item that fetched the highest price in the auction was a shirt worn by Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the Asian Games. It raised Dh16 million after a bidding war between several businessmen. The winning bid was made by Mohammad Al Hashemi on behalf Za'abeel Investments.
Shaikh Ahmad Bin Hasher Al Maktoum handed a duplicate of the 2004 Olympic gold medal he won in Athens to Mohammad Kini, got Dh1 million bid. Celebrity cricketer Sachin Tendulkar' signed opus raised Dh300,000. The karate outfit worn by Shaikha Maitha Bint Mohammad Al Maktoum when she won a medal at the Asian Games in Doha last year fetched Dh700,000.
Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, donated Dh3 million to Dubai Cares. He presented the cheque to Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Al Gaddah, a UAE-based Syrian businessman, donated Dh25 million. Deepak Pagarani of Al Maya Group donated Dh1 million.
Help: Maktoum visits schools in Bosnia
Post-war Bosnia-Herzegovina requires a system based on the principles of tolerance and peace to help the country's development and Dubai Cares can play a role in achieving that, said Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Al Maktoum on a recent visit there.
"Through Dubai Cares, we will impact a meaningful difference on the lives of these children and help them break free from the repercussions of the war," he said.
