School 'expels' pupils for non-payment of fees
An Arab private school expelled a number of students during morning assembly yesterday with no explanation, parents said.
Ras Al Khaimah: An Arab private school expelled a number of students during morning assembly yesterday with no explanation, parents said.
Many parents were surprised to find their children had been bussed back home and called the school to find out why. They learnt it had been because they had failed to pay tuition fees.
The parents said the school told the children not to return until their parents had resolved the problem with the management. The parents submitted a group complaint to the Educational District and the Ministry of Education regarding the school's attitude.
The parents confessed to having received requests from the school management urging them to pay the due installment of their children's fees. They asked the management to be patient and wait until their salaries arrived.
Working parents
Expelled students of working parents came home to an empty house. The scenario was even worse for younger children who did not know how to contact their parents.
A senior Ministry of Education official said the Private Education Department confirmed the incident. He said according to instruction no. 4 of article no. 52 of the private education executive law, a private school cannot expel a student for failing to settle fees.
The school should, by law, issue three written requests to the family to pay the fees.
The way the school management tackled the issue was wrong and the school could be held responsible for any incidents which may have befelled the students, said the official.
The owner of the school denied the incident and declined to comment.
