Dubai: Some of the funds raised through the Dubai Cares initiative have been pledged towards educating 10,000 Palestinian children living in refugee camps in northern Lebanon, it was announced yesterday.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, allocated the funds in response to an appeal issued by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, seeking funds to put children in the Al Baddawi camp through school.

Over half of the 10,000 children were displaced following the recent violence in Nahr Al Bared camp and Shaikh Mohammad has directed officials to take immediate steps to ensure a smooth start for their new academic year.

"The funds will bring huge relief to the children of the camp, UNRWA Commissioner General Karen Koning Abu Zayd said.

Yesterday, also donations poured in for Dubai Cares, with Emaar Properties donating Dh25 million, bringing the total raised since the launch on September 19 to about Dh378 million.
