Dubai: Taaleem, the second largest private education provider in Dubai has announced fee increases in two of its schools on Tuesday.

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has approved around 20 per cent fee increases in The American Academy for Girls in Al Mizhar and the Uptown school in Mirdif.

The approvals for fee increase comes within a month after KHDA stated that schools are not justified to burden parents as the economic climate in the emirate has stabilised.

Mohammad Darwish, Chief of Regulations and Compliance Commission at KHDA said in a statement issued to the media that Article No. 2 — of the Ministerial decree No. 203/1 of 2008 which refers to exemptions to fee increases — has been enforced in Taaleem's case.

The restructuring of fee is granted only for the academic year 2010-2011.

"Taaleem has been in dialogue with KHDA and the MOE regarding its fee structure for the past year. KHDA constantly worked with the Ministry of Education throughout the year and recommendations were put through," Darwish said.

He emphasised that no other fee increases have been granted.

However, GEMS, the largest provider of private education has announced fee increases in its Asian schools this week despite KHDA's stand on fee freeze.

Minister of Education, Humaid Al Qutami told Gulf News that fee increases were allowed for GEMS on a case by case basis.
