Dubai: The Greenfield Community School (GCS) held a ground-breaking ceremony for Phase 2 of their International Baccalaureate (IB) school on Monday. The celebrations included placing items into a school time capsule, laying the first foundation stone and Arabic dancing by the students.

Phase 2 of the school will be opening in September 2010 and will include numerous spacious classrooms, an auditorium, a greenhouse, drama, music and dance studios, physics, chemistry and biology labs, learning enhancement suites, art and design studios, design technology rooms and a senior cafeteria.

Natural light

Bringing the outside in, the building design will allow natural light to flow into the classrooms and communal areas.

The two main teaching buildings will be separated by a colonnade through the centre with trees and plants being planted to create a natural environment for students to move through.

The new building will house middle-year students (Grade 6 through to Grade 10) from September 2010 and diploma year students (Grade 11 and Grade 12) from September 2011. This will allow GCS to educate children age 4-18 years old.

Students placed memorable items into a time capsule including the current school uniform, past yearbooks, letters to the students of 2019, photographs of day-to-day school life and a CD of contemporary music.
