Dubai: Domestic and international businesses operating in the UAE are expected to make a "substantial contribution" to the Dubai Cares campaign, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said yesterday.
"I expect the private sector to make a substantial contribution, including the international corporations and their offices in the UAE," he told delegates at the campaign announcement.
Campaign officials said financial donations from the UAE's vast business sector will form the bulk of the Dh200 million that the campaign hopes to raise.
"The business community has a significant role to play. Their combined corporate social responsibility has to be activated on a bigger level," said Mohammad Al Emadi, Dubai Cares project director.
"With this initiative, His Highness is giving companies the mechanism to conduct corporate social responsibility on a greater level, targeted specifically at children's education."
Al Emadi said the campaign will "open its doors" to any form of support, but urged companies to offer more than just financial aid.
Initiatives
"We will welcome whatever ideas companies have and whatever initiatives are relevant to their sector. But instead of just giving financial aid, we urge companies to play a greater functional and proactive role," he said.
Soon after the campaign launch, Dubai-based real estate developer Damac Properties publicly made its support. The company said it will donate 10 apartments that will be auctioned to raise funds for Dubai Cares
"We have grown at a tremendous pace and we have set the path for others to follow in the property marketplace and aim to replicate the same when it comes to corporate social responsibility. We are proud to be part of this initiative," said Hussain Sajwani, chairman of Damac Holding.
