Dubai: One man was killed and two injured in a traffic accident on Hissa Road in Dubai on Thursday, a senior police official said.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Chief of the Traffic Department at Dubai Police, said one passenger sustained serious injures while the other sustained moderate injures when their car collided with the concrete barrier in the middle of Hissa Road at 6am on Thursday.

“The accident happened when the driver of the car FJ Cruiser lost control and hit the cement road barrier,” said Al Zafein, adding that the driver of the car died on spot.

The three men were not carrying identification on them at the time of the accident.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver was trying to swerve from one lane to another lane when he lost control.

Police patrols and officials reached the scene immediately.

Lt Colonel Omar Musa Ashor, Yahiya Al Hamadi, and Sergeant Ahmad Khalaf inspected the accident scene.

“It is very dangerous move by any driver to swerve suddenly because that will lead to the collision of the vehicle and that will endanger the life of the driver, the passengers on board and other people on the roads,” said Al Zafein.

He said that said last year sudden lane changes by motorists caused 473 traffic accidents, killing 21 people and seriously injuring 38 others.

As many as 152 people sustained moderate injuries and a further 284 sustained minor injures.

He said swerving by drivers was the second cause of death for people in traffic accidents in Dubai.

“Carelessness while driving topped the list last year, killing 40 people,” he said.
