A worker will spend a month in jail for biting a policeman's finger while resisting arrest, a court has ruled.

Dubai: A worker will spend a month in jail for biting a policeman's finger while resisting arrest, a court has ruled.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 22-year-old Pakistani worker, A.A., for resisting arrest, assaulting a police corporal and preventing him from carrying out his duties, as charged by the Public Prosecution.

Court records said a police patrol spotted the accused walking suspiciously near a bank on Shaikh Zayed Road. The team stopped and asked him for his identification.

"He refused to show his personal documents and started running. We chased and tried to arrest him and take him for questioning. He resisted arrest and quarrelled with us. Then he ferociously bit my right thumb," the assaulted police corporal said in his statement. Following the incident in March, the accused was handcuffed and taken for questioning to Bur Dubai police station. Medical reports said the corporal sustained injuries to his thumb besides mild bruises to his shoulder and left thigh.

At the station, the 22-year-old denied his charges. He said, in his statement, he was unaware that the individuals who stopped him were policemen.

Meanwhile, a police officer refuted his claims saying: "It was a police patrol in civilian clothing but the personnel identified themselves as policemen."

The initial verdict is subject to appeal.
