Dubai: A worker has been accused of paying for a drink in a nightclub with an allegedly fake $100 banknote.

The 33-year-old Indian worker was said to have visited the nightclub to chill out and have a drink after a long working day. When the worker's bill mounted to Dh90, he took out a $100 banknote and paid the bill.

However the Indian bartender asked the suspect, J.A., to pay his bill in dirhams. The latter said he only had US dollars and went to the washroom.

Since the man was a regular customer at the bar, the bartender accepted the currency, and went to the hotel's restaurant to get change for $100.

To his surprise, one of the waiters told him that the suspect had been in one night before and paid with a $100 bank note that turned out to be counterfeit.

The bartender was said to have immediately informed his boss and called the police, according to prosecution records.

Police arrested the worker, who prosecutors accused of possessing fake banknotes for trading purposes.

When the defendant appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance, he pleaded not guilty and claimed in court that he did not know that the dollars were counterfeit.

A verdict will be heard on June 11.
