Dubai: A British woman, facing trial for reportedly engaging in sexual activity with a compatriot male at Jumeirah beach, failed to appear in court on Tuesday because she was fatigued.
The Public Prosecution charged the woman, M.P., and her alleged sex partner, V.A., both in their 30s, with having sex in public, committing an indecent gesture in public and consuming alcohol.
M.P.'s lawyer Hasan Mattar said his client was sick and tired and didn't appear in the Dubai Court of Misdemeanour when Presiding Judge Hamdi Abu Al Khair called her name. Meanwhile, V.A., who was on a short visit to Dubai at the time when the incident happened in July, was present.
The judge adjourned the case until October 7 to hear the statement of the policeman who stopped them after he also failed to attend yesterday's hearing.
Speedy verdict
M.P., and her alleged partner, V.A., had earlier denied having sex in public and requested a speedy verdict so they could return to their country quickly.
Mattar argued they were not guilty of any indecent act in public. "My clients are innocent ... the medical reports have proven that there was no sexual activity," Mattar defended.
The suspects are currently out on bail after having placed their passports with the Public Prosecution's custody. The duo confessed to consuming alcohol after M.P. handed her liquor permit to the judge.
Mattar said earlier: "The Public Prosecution failed to produce corroborative evidence against my clients concerning having consensual sex and committing indecent gestures in public. The suspects tested positive for liquor, which appeared in their blood and urine tests."
