Dubai: A visitor will spend 10 years in jail after a court convicted him on Wednesday of smuggling 80 capsules of heroin in his stomach for selling in Dubai.
The Dubai Court of First Instance also fined the 28-year-old Pakistani defendant Dh50,000 for illegally bringing heroin capsules weighing 782 grammes with the intent to deal it in Dubai.
Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir, who announced the verdict, said the accused, C.C., will be deported after serving his imprisonment and paying the fine.
The accused man admitted smuggling the heroin capsules in his stomach but denied any intention to sell or distribute them in Dubai.
The Public Prosecution charged C.C. with smuggling heroin for promotional purposes.
"I am guilty and I did swallow the capsules and tried to smuggle them out of Dubai International Airport because I was supposed to deliver them to another person," said the suspect when he defended himself before the court.
