Dubai: Police have seized a Korean and an Iraqi ship for cutting two of the internet cables in the Gulf, which damaged the network in the UAE and other countries in the region in January.
A break down of internet connections and international calls occurred in January after three cables were cut.
Dubai Police had received a report from the coast guards in Dubai that the two ships were responsible for cutting the cables.
Dubai Police had detained the ships after obtaining satellite pictures.
Brigadier Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Deputy Director of Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation and Preventative security Department, said Ports Police Station arrested the sailors of the first ship. The ship's approved agent in the country confessed that the ship damaged one of the cables because of a storm that day.
Based on that, the company owning the ship, made a settlement with FLAG Telecom Group, the cable system operators in the UAE. The company paid $60,000 as compensation.
The Public Prosecution released the Iraqi ship after a bank guarantee was given for the damages caused.
