Abu Dhabi: A Russian drug dealer wanted by authorities in his country for smuggling and dealing in narcotics was caught by the Abu Dhabi Police, a statement by the Ministry of Interior said on Sunday.

Colonel Saeed Abdullah Al Suwaidi, director general of the Federal Anti-Narcotics Directorate, said that A.G., who had evaded capture for three years, was running a drug trafficking ring believed to be responsible for smuggling large amounts of narcotics and mind-altering drugs. The suspect is also believed to have traded in the illegal substances in Russia.

According to a police statement, Russian authorities had earlier confiscated 295 kilograms of heroin from the suspect and arrested some of the ring’s members. However, A.G. is said to have eluded arrest by using four passports under false names.

Investigation of the suspect’s aliases led the police to his true identity, Al Suwaidi said. The Federal Anti-Narcotics Directorate arrested A.G. one day after he had entered the UAE.

Meanwhile, Major Ahmad Abdul Aziz Jasem, director of the Anti-Narcotics Department at Sharjah Police, said that upon finding the suspect’s place of residence, an anti-narcotics team tracked his movement and surrounded the location he was visiting.

After deciding on the time of arrest, the suspect was tracked down and arrested. He will be handed to Russian authorities.
