Abu Dhabi: Robbery cases witnessed a huge decline in the past months as a result of the security awareness campaign launched by Abu Dhabi Police, according to a police press release.

The campaign, launched in January 2008, was aimed at increasing the awareness of bank customers when they carry cash after withdraw money from local banks and ATMs in the country.

Bank customers were urged by Abu Dhabi Police to exercise extreme caution while carrying cash after withdrawing money from bank ATMs.

The campaign succeeded in reducing robbery cases from March figures of 11 to 7 in April and May, and the cases have continued declining, with two cases reported from June to November.

Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Al Hannai, head of the Organised Crime at Abu Dhabi Police, said the drive came in line with the security strategy of Abu Dhabi police which aims to enhance security awareness among the public.

"The negligence of bank customers is the main cause of robbery," he said.

Al Hannai urged bank customers not to carry large amounts of money to avoid falling victim to thieves.

He also praised the vigilance of security men who kept the public safe.
