Dubai: The Dubai Public Prosecution has appealed to the courts to apply stiffer punishments against four young UAE nationals who were convicted of gang-raping a flight attendant last week.

Appealing against the initial ruling, the public prosecution asked the Dubai Court of Appeal to apply the stiffest punishments, as per the UAE Penal Code, against the four nationals, a judicial source told Gulf News on Tuesday.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced each of the four, identified as S.Z., 21, A.Z. and K.S., both 20, and I.A., 19, to two years in jail. Two other nationals, identified as A.H. and J.Z., both 21, were acquitted for insufficient evidence.

The four convicts were earlier charged with luring the 23-year-old British victim into their car, driving off to a remote area and raping her.

The source confirmed that the public prosecution also appealed against the two suspects who were acquitted. The Appeal's Court will hold its first hearing towards the mid of this month to look into the appeal that was also filed by the convicts.

The convicts were also ordered to jointly pay the victim Dh10,001 in temporary compensation. The Briton could be seeking a bigger compensation against her moral and financial damages only after the appeal's court lands it's ruling.

The police heard that the victim, who was a newcomer in town, was raped after the accused drove her off to a remote area where they raped her.
