Dubai: Some policemen who escorted American hip-hop producer Dallas Austin from his detention centre in Dubai to the courtroom on Saturday described him as a "friendly and humble person".

A number of policemen said, "Austin has a friendly and loveable personality and he is very kind".

"He kept asking us not to allow the press to take his pictures," a jail guard told Gulf News yesterday.

Essam Eisa Al Humaidan, Dubai's Attorney General, told Gulf News yesterday, "Austin has not been granted a ruler's pardon yet and he is still in police custody. He was not even granted bail. It is unlikely to release someone before the verdict especially in drugs and murder cases. However, our role starts after the judge hands down a ruling because the Public Prosecution is the authority which executes the criminal rulings."

The 34-year-old songwriter appeared in Dubai Court of First Instance on Saturday and pleaded guilty to possessing 1.26 grams of cocaine and five-and-a-half capsules of cocaine and an MDM drug.

Dubai Court of First Instance is expected to issue its verdict today.
