Dubai: Dubai Police rescued a Bangladeshi man from his captors within hours of his kidnapping recently.
The Bangladeshi trader was struggling with his business in the course of the economic downturn and had run up debts with some other traders who kidnapped him and sought to raise the money owed them by means of ransom, said a police officer.
According to Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, director of the General Department for Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police, the incident was reported on December 9 after the brother of the victim received a threatening call.
Threatening call
"The brother was threatened that his brother would be killed if he didn't provide half-a-million dirhams, an amount that exceeds the debt owed to his brother's kidnappers," said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, director of the Criminal Investigation Section at Dubai Police.
He said: "People from this particular region tend to settle their debts by kidnapping.
"When we freed the man from his captives he was so petrified that he confused us with his captors and thought we were about to kill him," he said.
A specialised team handled the case to ensure the safety of the victim and to bring to book all those suspected of the kidnapping. "Five of them were arrested on the same day except for a sixth member who was arrested on December 12."
