One killed and 30 injured in traffic accidents last weekend in Abu Dhabi
One person was killed and 30 others were injured in a spate of traffic accidents during the weekend in Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabi: One person was killed and 30 others were injured in a spate of traffic accidents during the weekend in Abu Dhabi.
At least 17 major accidents took place during the weekend, the police said. A UAE national was killed after his car caught fire in an accident. Among the 30 injured, five were young children, three of whom were nationals and two others were from Saudi Arabia. None of the children were seriously injured.
Major Yaslam Mubarak Al Tamimi, the Head of Investigation and management of serious accidents section, said that the main reason behind the accidents were over-speeding, lack of attention and neglect of drivers.
Three accidents involved pedestrians being hurt. A 6 year old child sustained serious injuries after being run over by a car in Al Yahar area. An 11 year old Emarati child and an Indian woman suffered minor injuries in separate accidents on the Airport road (Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Street).
Ten people were injured in an accident involving colllison of two cars before Rawdath Al Reef Bridge, two children, Emirati and Saudi, were among the injured. An Australian biker suffered serious injuries in an accident near Khalifa City A.
Five Emaratis were injured, one person seriously, in an accident between two cars in Shamkha area. The injured were taken to the Al Rahba and Mafraq hospitals.
Five others were injured in an accident between a car and a truck on the Truck Road (Al Faaya Road). In another incident, a British man was seriously injured after his car overturned in Khatem near Budeeb.
Five people were injured in an accident in Musaffah. Four of the people had minor injuries while one person suffered from serious injuries.
Four people were injured, one seriously, in another accident at an intersection in Ruwais.
The traffic police embarked on an awareness campaign on Sunday to educate drivers about road safety. Here are some tips:
Before travelling
Check your vehicle for its overall fitness, tyres etc..
Avoid travelling if you feel unwell, tired or if you are on medication
Equip your vehicle with essential safety gears
Do's and Donts
Fasten your seat belt and ensure co-passengers do the same
Always adhere to traffic rules, signals and instructions
Be attentive, careful and expect others to commit mistakes
Keep sufficient space between vehicles
Stick to speed limits
Follow the passenger limit of the vehicle and avoid over loading.
Give priority to emergency vehicles like ambulance
While overtaking make sure that there is sufficient space between your vehicle and the vehicle you are overtaking
Switch on the head lights during night and foggy weather conditions and do not use hazard signals unless there is an emergency
Avoid talking on phone, eating or reading while you drive
Avoid travelling during midnight and before sunrise, if possible
It is important to understand that the left lanes on the highways are not meant for speeding but are meant for overtaking.
