Dubai: Dubai Police caught more than 100,000 offenders who violated the residency laws over the last five years with an average of 18 offenders a day, the Dubai Police Chief said on Thursday.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim said the special team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was able to arrest 103,346 offenders of residency laws from November 2000 through 2005.

He said about 79,000 of them entered and stayed in the country illegally, and 10,000 stayed illegally after their visas expired, and another 13,000 were absconders.

"The arrested offenders were able to enter the country from nearby areas such as Oman and other emirates, but they were caught in Dubai," Lieutenant General Dahi said.

"The team was successful in arresting the offenders of residency laws and it had achieved what teams of other government agencies failed to achieve regarding controlling illegal residency issues," Lieutenant General Dahi said.

He honoured the team members, as they had achieved the best results in 2005. Lieutenant General Dahi said 38,062 of the offenders were caught in Dubai in 2005 only and 23,186 of them were infiltrators.

He said the team members worked day and night for the security and stability of the country and their only weapon was enthusiasm.

"The number of offenders caught by other parties in the country is small compared to the number caught by Dubai Police team," Lieutenant General Dahi said.

He praised the efforts of the team who worked hard to catch the offenders, who form a fertile environment for crimes in the country, especially that most of them do not have official papers or passports which poses a big threat to the country.

He pointed out that he will meet with the security parties concerned in the country to ask them to play 'real roles' in catching the offenders and infiltrators other than those who are already here.

Lieutenant General Dahi said 380 of the arrested offenders entered the country from borders close to Dubai, as the gap was not wide in Dubai borders. He said the gap was in other areas and all at the country level need to work together to close that gap.

Municipal inspectors arrest 233 offenders

Municipality inspectors nabbed last month 233 persons including street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers.

The sweep against the law-breakers had also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality goods, pirated CDs and foodstuff in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department.

Nine inspectors caught a total of 233 people including 142 street vendors, 25 beggars, 51 car washers and 15 illegal butchers and fish cleaners in August 2006.

A total of 1,264 counterfeit products including ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras, and watches that were fake international brands were confiscated.

Thirty-one people were arrested in Sharjah on Wednesday working illegally in the emirate, according to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Interior.
