Abu Dhabi: Much to the dismay of a loving family, officials confirmed that a 62-year-old man, reported missing from Musaffah on August 24, was killed in a hit-and-run accident on August 25.
The elderly Pakistan national, Riaz Ahmad, went missing two weeks ago from his home, where he lived with his wife. He suffered from a memory problem, which might have prevented him from returning home, family members said.
His wife had informed the Musaffah police station the night he went missing and filed a formal notice the next morning.
On Thursday, police contacted the family and asked them to identify a body at the morgue.
Pain
"It is with great pain that we realised that we were searching in vain," said Mawash Pervez, Ahmad's daughter, who resides in Sharjah with her family. "The body we saw at the morgue was my father's. Police informed us that he died in a road accident in the Al Bahia area at 12.30am on August 25," she added.
A case has been filed at the Al Mafraq Police station. According to the family, the driver, also a Pakistani, was arrested after the accident and is currently free on bail.
"We have been told that since there were no papers on my father to aid identification, it took the authorities a long time to get to us," Mawash said yesterday, as she was on her way to a graveyard in Baniyas to bury her father.
"But this explanation is still not good enough for us. For 17 days we ran from pillar to post. All this while, my father's body was lying unrecognised in the morgue.
"It is terribly painful to know that," she said tearfully, adding that the family will file a complaint with the Pakistan Embassy to get an explanation about the negligence.
