Dubai: A suspect has pleaded not guilty to possessing five stolen mobile phones and said he only possessed two, a court heard on Monday.

The Public Prosecution charged the 34-year-old Omani suspect, identified as J.B., with possessing five mobile phones which were reportedly stolen by two armed thieves.

"I am innocent... I possessed two mobile phones but I wasn't aware that they were stolen from a shop," J.B. told the Dubai Court of First Instance.

A CID corporal testified: "One or more thieves broke into an electronics and computer shop and robbed a number of cell phones... initial interrogations revealed that some of the stolen items were being circulated in shops in Deira which sell mobile phones.

Fingerprints

"It was also discovered that J.B. was involved in selling the phones. Forensic experts discovered that the fingerprints matched those of a suspect named A.R. [currently being prosecuted before the criminal court on theft charges]... the latter was brought from his detention centre and he alleged that J.B. sold the stolen mobiles."

A first policeman, who questioned A.R., stated: "A.R. confessed that another suspect, A.S., assisted him in breaking and entering into the shop and stealing the phones plus Dh800 to Dh900 in cash."

A 32-year-old Indian who manages the shop testified: "On the day of the incident the thieves destroyed the front door and stole five cell phones and nearly Dh900 from the petty cash drawer."
