Abu Dhabi Iris scans have blocked attempts by as many as 281,566 deported people from re-entering the country, according to the latest figures released by the Abu Dhabi Police.

The figure sums up all such cases across all emirates until August.

Some of those turned back had been caught earlier trying to enter the country illegally while others had been deported after being convicted of involvement in illegal activities.

Meanwhile, a project providing the Abu Dhabi Police and the Public Prosecution with an electronic interface has been completed. The database will enhance security by providing easier access to information on all criminals.

The UAE is one of the first countries in the world to use the iris scan system and owns the largest database of iris scans in the world, according to the police.
