The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) here yesterday arrested 16 Asians on charges of gambling.
Ras Al Khaimah: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) here yesterday arrested 16 Asians on charges of gambling.
Addressing a press conference at the premises of the emirate's police headquarters, Lt Col Salem Sultan Al Darmaki, who heads the investigation section at the CID, said the CID received a tip-off that a group of people of various Asian nationalities had been involved in gambling.
"The suspects, between the ages of 25 and 50, met in an organised way to gamble," he said.
Undercover police agents reported the group gathered in an old house in the old city of Ras Al Khaimah for gambling.
"Gambling is a serious crime. The case was discussed with Gen Shaikh Taleb Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chief of RAK police," he added.
Shaikh Taleb asked police to act immediately.
Lt Col Al Darmaki said police found in their investigations the suspects gambled almost daily.
Police secured permission from the emirate's Public Prosecution to raid the house. Playing cards and thousands of dirhams were seized.
The detainees confessed to gambling, and that most of them had been spending more than half their salaries on gambling.
Lt Col Al Darmaki said the suspects also confessed to moving from one place to another to avoid detection, until finally settling for one house.
He said the detainees, the playing cards and the money were referred to the Public Prosecution to press charges. They will appear in court later.
