Dubai: An engineer was jailed and fined, on Tuesday, for driving a car under the influence of liquor, just 43 days after having been fined Dh15,000 for riding his motorcycle drunk and using a licence that didn't allow him to ride a motorcycle.

The same judge sentenced the suspect, the 32-year-old Australian engineer, between May 16 and June 29.

On Tuesday, Dubai Traffic Court of First Instance's Presiding Judge Dr Ahmad Hassan Al Mutawa jailed the engineer for two months and fined him Dh21,000 for driving a car under the influence of liquor.

The convict's driving licence was revoked for one year.

Although the accused sought leniency when he pleaded guilty for drink-driving his motorcycle in the May case, but he got involved in a new drunken-driving case in June. Prosecution records showed that he drove recklessly and hit a signpost in Al Bida'a area while he drove a taxi under the influence of alcohol.

Additional charges

The Traffic Public Prosecution (TPP) charged the 32-year-old convict (in the June case) with reckless and drunken driving and damage to property. He was additionally charged with leaving the scene of the accident and driving the taxi without the driver's permission .

When the accused appeared before in court on Tuesday he pleaded guilty and asked for mercy.

The court gave him a one-month sentence and fined him Dh20,000 for reckless and drink driving and causing an accident. He was jailed an additional month for fleeing from the accident scene and fined an additional Dh1,000 for driving a car without its owner's permission.

Records said the Australian quarrelled with the taxi driver and punched him before driving away in the cab without permission.
