Sharjah: Police have arrested eight men and women who conned residents into believing they could double quantities of money.

A senior official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News that the eight African suspects, four men from Cameroon, three women from Ethiopia and one from Guinea were taken into custody in Sharjah.

"The suspects fooled people into believing that they had magic powers and that they could double any amount of cash. They had a large bag that contained a vast amount of counterfeit currency of dollar bills and packages of shredded black paper, as well as liquid that was used to pretend to double the money," said Colonel Mohammad Rashid Bayat, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Sharjah police headquarters.

The gang was arrested in an apartment in Sharjah, as they touted for victims who would believe their ability to double amounts of money. They were unaware, however, that they were under surveillance by CID who were suspicious of their movements.

A CID team raided the residential tower where the suspects were living and managed to arrest all eight. They found them to be possession of a bag containing large quantities of counterfeit dollar bills.

Colonel Bayat pointed out that five of the suspects were also wanted by police departments across the country.

He warned the public to be vigilant of such scams. "The public are urged not to fall into the trap of such criminals and believe everything they hear, because they can then lose all of their money and their savings. If anybody faces such types of people, who claim to have the power to double money, they should notify the police immediately," he added.

All eight suspects have confessed to the crime and the case has been transferred to Sharjah Public Prosecution.
