- Russian media reports on Monday said Sulaiman Madov was badly injured in the attack and is in hospital.
Dubai: Dubai Police have refuted media reports released on Monday that stated Chechen Suliaman Madov was not dead, but had been "badly injured".
Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, confirmed to Gulf News that Madov was shot dead in the parking lot of the building where he lived.
Some media reports said Madov had been admitted to a hospital in Dubai, with others adding that he had fired back at his attacker.
Madov, born in 1973, was shot dead in the ground-floor parking lot of Rimal Building 6 at the luxurious Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) at around 3pm.
Russian General Council Sergei Krasnogor confirmed Madov's death.
A friend said that Madov had not been residing in Dubai.
"He was on a visit to the UAE. He used to come every now and then to the UAE.
"He used to stay in an apartment at Jumeirah Beach Residence that belongs to one of his friends," the friend said.
The friend said that Madov's elder brother, Ruslan, who was member of the Russian parliament, was killed in Russia last year.
"Other friends and myself are following the news through the Russian media. The Russian TV stations and other media have shown much interest in reporting on the assassination of Madov," the friend said.
The source added that Russian TV had reported on Sunday that the Dubai Police had arrested Madov's killer.
Some media reports on Sunday identified the man who was killed as Sulim Yamadayev, the former commander of the disbanded Chechen 'Vostok' battalion and believed to be an opponent of Moscow-backed Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
Lieutenant General Dahi said the victim's passport identified him as 'Suliaman Madov'.
"A Russian passport with this name was found with the victim and two individuals were with him at the time of the shooting," said Lieutenant General Dahi, adding that there were witnesses to the crime.
According to a worker at the Rimal building who spoke on condition of anonymity, more than one attempt was made on Madov's life.
"I heard about the murder from the news, but to my brief knowledge I have heard of a number of previous failed attempts to assassinate the victim," the source said.
Dubai Police did not confirm this, but the Chief of Dubai Police said earlier in a media statement: "It seems the 36-year-old victim, named Sulaiman Madov, had been under surveillance for some time."

Speculation: Motive for murder
Analysts have said that liquidating Sulim Yamadayev could be in the interest of his bitter rival Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya.
According to John Russel, author of the book Chechnya: Russia's 'War on terror', Yamadayev did not think Kadyrov was behind the assassination of his brother Ruslan Yamadayev, a prominent political figure, in September 2008. However, speculation is rife that Kadyrov and/or his supporters were involved in the assassination in Moscow in 2006 of a former 'dissident' commander, and that Yamadayev may have held a grudge for this reason.
