Deported car thieves caught again
A gang of car thieves who were jailed three years ago and were subsequently deported, managed to re-enter the country and resume their operations, police sources told Gulf News.
Sharjah: A gang of car thieves who were jailed three years ago and were subsequently deported, managed to re-enter the country and resume their operations, police sources told Gulf News.
Police said the men were deported at a time when iris scans were not available.
Police said the five Afghans who used to steal luxury vehicles were arrested by Sharjah Police on the first day of Eid.
Police said the gang comprised three men who were deported from the country and managed to enter through visit visas three months ago after changing their names and obtaining different passports. They later obtained residency visas sponsored by a contracting company in Dubai. The sponsor said that he was not aware of the workers' activities.
A fourth member of the gang is also an Afghan who entered the country illegally, while the fifth is a legal resident and owns a scrap shop in the Sharjah Industrial area, police said.
More than 15 luxury vehicles were recovered from the gang, which they managed to hide in various areas of Sharjah and Ajman.
The thieves also used some of the stolen vehicles for transport.
"They used stolen number plates for the vehicles they were driving," police said.
According to police the gang had kept some of the vehicles in containers to ship them out of the country.
"Some of the vehicles were kept in the scrapyard of one of the gang members," police said.
