Dubai: The Court of First Instance has sentenced five men to spend a year in jail for beating up their colleague and compatriot to death inside their accommodation in Jebel Ali.

Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout also acquitted one of the accused, identified only as F.K., for insufficient evidence that he participated in the crime.

The five - all Indians aged between 21 and 25 - will be deported after serving their sentence. The decision is subject to a 15-day appeal.

Three of the accused were electricians while the remaining worked as construction workers.

Prosecution records said all six accused pleaded not guilty to charges that they caused the victim's death.

Evidence presented to the court said the victim, identified only as R.M., sustained severe head injuries after his colleagues ganged up on him and beat him up with wooden clubs.

Prosecutors also said five of the accused admitted to the crime during investigation. According to a police officer, who was assigned to the case, one of the accused, identified as S.A., told him that he was in his room when somebody came in and told him that a group of men were being assaulted.

"The defendant claimed that he grabbed a wooden bar and walked out. S.A. [said] he saw a group of 40 men assaulting the [victim] and he only beat R.M. on his leg once," the police officer said.
