Dubai: Two Chinese visitors have landed behind bars after a court convicted them of threatening to kill their compatriot saleswoman if she didn't pay them Dh5,000.

The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the two accused, 24-year-old J.J. and 22-year-old L.L., three months each. The suspects will be deported after serving their jail terms.

Prosecutors said the defendants asked the 30-year-old saleswoman to pay them money in case she wanted them to keep her alive.

The two accused pleaded innocent and strongly denied threatening to kill the saleswoman, as charged by the Public Prosecution.

The saleswoman, only identified as N., testified that her female assistant informed her over the phone that four men walked into her shop and asked for money.

"The four suspects were in my shop when one of them told me over the phone 'they will offer me protection if I give them for Dh5,000 and if I object they will kill me'.

"Later he phoned me a second time and demanded Dh2,000. I asked for some time then headed to Al Rashidiya police station and lodged a threat complaint," claimed the victim.

The assistant told prosecutors: "The four men walked in and demanded money. I told them I couldn't do anything. I heard one of them threatening my boss over the phone that they will kill her in case she didn't pay them money."

The suspects were arrested in a sting operation. "We agreed with N. to arrange with the suspects and ask them to meet her to give them Dh2,000. We arrested J.J., who came to pick up the money. L.L. was arrested inside a car parked nearby," added the first corporal.

The primary verdict is still subject to appeal within 15 days.
